The Rongai Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter, less crowded path. This route is ideal for trekkers who prefer a gentle gradient with gradual altitude gain, while still enjoying spectacular views of Kibo and Mawenzi Volcanoes.

Rongai also has a high summit success rate, making it suitable for first-time climbers or those who want a peaceful, scenic trek.

ITINERARY

Upon arrival, you will be greeted by a Travel with Shira representative and transferred to your hotel. The hotel offers comfortable rooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, and friendly service.

In the evening, meet your lead guide for a full climb briefing and equipment check.

After breakfast, depart by vehicle to Nalemuru Gate (2,020m), the northern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park. After registration and permits, begin trekking to Simba Camp (2,671m) through coniferous forest along the northern slopes.

Take your time and maintain a steady pace. At camp, the team will prepare tents and dinner.

Trekking Time: 3–4 hours
Distance: 8 km

Altitude Tips:

  • Drink at least 4 liters of water per day

  • Consider preventive high-altitude medication

  • Report any symptoms of altitude sickness to your guide

Trek from Simba Camp to Kikilewa Camp (3,630m). This day involves more physical effort, with the trail gradually ascending toward the northern flanks of Kibo Volcano. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo if the skies are clear.

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 10 km

After breakfast, continue trekking to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m), at the base of Mawenzi Volcano, Kilimanjaro’s second-highest peak. After lunch and rest, take a short acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Volcano (+200m) before returning to camp.

Acclimatization Hike:

  • Start: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,315m)

  • Destination: Mawenzi Volcano (4,510m)

  • Distance: 2 km / 1.2 miles

  • Hiking Time: 1–2 hours

Trekking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: 6 km

Trek across the rocky, semi-desert slopes to Kibo Hut Camp (4,720m). Rest and hydrate well in preparation for summit night.

Trekking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: 9 km

Depart around midnight from Kibo Hut for the summit attempt to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Climbers are paired with a personal guide for safety and support. After reaching the summit, you can walk to nearby glaciers.

Descent continues to Kibo Hut for a short rest and lunch, then further down to Horombo Camp (3,720m).

Trekking Time: 12–14 hours
Distance: 21 km

Descend through rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,970m), marking the end of the trek. Celebrate with your team, receive your summit certificates, and transfer back to your hotel.

Distance: 18 km

After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward flight.
