Selous National Park, recently renamed Nyerere National Park, is one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa, covering approximately 50,000 square kilometers. Located in southern Tanzania, it offers vast, untouched landscapes of savannahs, riverine forests, and wetlands, providing a true sense of wild Africa.

The park is famous for its high concentrations of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, lions, and African wild dogs, along with an incredible diversity of bird species. Wildlife in Selous is often less disturbed by tourism, allowing for intimate, up-close encounters in a remote and natural setting. The Rufiji River, which winds through the park, is central to the ecosystem and supports thrilling boat safaris and fishing experiences.

With Travel with Shira, visitors can explore Selous through guided game drives, walking safaris, and river excursions, experiencing one of Tanzania’s most pristine and exclusive safari destinations.

The best time to visit Selous/Nyerere National Park is during the dry season from June to October, when wildlife concentrates around water sources and game viewing is easiest. The wet season (November to May) brings lush landscapes and excellent birdwatching but can make some roads less accessible.

If you want, I can also make a short, punchy version for itinerary cards or highlight sections, and even include a luxury safari tone for Travel with Shira.
